Key Summary of Dizziness
Dizziness, often thought to be solely an ear problem, has other true causes.
01 Two Types of Dizziness
- Rotational Dizziness (Vertigo): A feeling that the world is spinning. Accompanied by nausea and queasiness, it is often due to problems with the ear's balance organs (vestibular system).
- Non-Rotational Dizziness: A dull, foggy feeling in the head. In addition to brain problems, blood pressure issues, or anemia, **neck (cervical spine), temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and vagus nerve compression** can be key causes.
02 Easily Overlooked Causes: Neck, Jaw, Vagus Nerve
- Conflicting Sensory Information: When the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is misaligned, the cervical spine (neck bones) also becomes misaligned. At this time, incorrect postural information sent by neck muscles to the brain conflicts with balance information from the ears, causing the brain to become confused and leading to dull, foggy dizziness.
- Vagus Nerve Compression: Imbalance in the jaw and neck bones can compress the vagus nerve pathway (jugular foramen). Since the vagus nerve regulates the heart, digestive organs, etc., compression can lead to nausea, palpitations, cold sweats, and even fainting in severe cases.
- Trigeminal Nerve Over-excitation: In TMJ and cervical dizziness, the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation in the jaw, becomes over-excited, affecting the vestibular nervous system and worsening symptoms.
03 Fundamental Solution: Importance of a Structural Approach
While it can temporarily alleviate dizziness, it does not resolve the fundamental cause (structural problem) that sends distorted nerve signals.
It approaches the head-neck-jaw as a single integrated system. By balancing the TMJ, it **aligns the cervical spine** and resolves conflicting distorted sensory information, thereby **normalizing nerve transmission**.
Expected Effects: Alleviation of dull and foggy symptoms, improvement of gaze instability (restoration of visual stability), reduction of sensory errors through suboccipital muscle relaxation.
For dizziness of unknown cause, the answer must now be found in structure.
